A 1980s colonial with nothing to distinguish it from its neighbors, transformed into a craftsman-inspired home with real character without becoming a stranger on its own street.
Our clients wanted more than a facelift: a home with the individuality their builder-grade colonial never had. The challenge was doing that without the result looking like an addition bolted onto a house, or a design that ignored the neighborhood around it.
We replaced the flush rake trim across every gable with deeper eaves and soffits, giving the roofline the shadow line a craftsman home needs. A new covered entry, tapered columns rising from stone piers, a mahogany-look door, a bluestone porch floor replaced a builder-basic stoop. On the side, where the driveway naturally sent visitors to an overlooked door, a stone planter, a window trellis, and a cascading roofline turned an afterthought into a real entrance.
At the rear, an addition gave purpose to a dark, unused corner of the lot: a covered portico connecting an expanded great room to the yard, a second-story deck off a widened master suite, and a private terrace off the new master bath. New siding, windows, and trim across the entire house, not just the new construction tied the original structure and the additions into one coherent whole.
Inside, we removed a load-bearing wall in the family room, concealing the steel beam it required inside custom ceiling millwork so the newly opened room reads as though it was always this way. A dated brick fireplace became a proper mantel with built-in bookcases. A cramped kitchen dining nook grew into a real breakfast area with a walk-in pantry. Reconfigured partitions opened up the rest of the first floor, and the master bedroom’s rear wall moved out ten feet to make room for a new bath with a soaking tub, walk-in shower, dedicated dressing area, and private water closet.
